Acquarica del Capo
Acquarica del Capo placed in the middle of valley between “Serra di Pozzo Mauro” and “Serra di Cianci”. Probably,
Acquarica del Capo stands on the ruins of three old hamlets were close together: Cardigliano, Pompignano and Celsorizzo. The village of Gallipoli exercised it’s
control over these hamlets, later in 9th -10th century razed to the ground by Saracen Army.
The inhabitants occupied this area because of it’s good life condition thanks to the fertility of the
field and presence of rivers and streams. So, Acquarica del Capo was born: It’s name means “rich of water”.
Indeed, it’s civic blazon represents a gushing fountain. In the village there are four churches: Saint Charles Borromeo’s
church, Saint John The Baptist’s church, Saint Mary of Panett’s church and Madonna of the Bridge’s Chapel.
The guest can also visit the castle of Celsorizzo and different hypogeum in Acquarica has been the wicker manufacture, called “
Parieddhu”, and there are still some women mainly aged women, in the village how made baskets and bags.
